About FAIRLY
FAIRLY's goal is for you as a customer to get closer to the people behind the products you buy. FAIRLY also stands for a fairer distribution of profits.
The idea for FAIRLY came about when I did a design internship at a charity organization in India in 2018. There I met groups with various disabilities, among other things I visited several leprosy colonies. There I met people who were exposed to discrimination and ignorance on a daily basis, which led to great difficulties in getting work and being able to provide for their families. Through the charity, they learned different types of handicrafts and were thus able to start supporting both themselves and their families. What had been seen as a burden to their families was now a steady source of income. I felt that I wanted to continue my collaboration even after I went home to Sweden and continue working with one of the women's collectives. So here we have FAIRLY. FAIRLY makes small quantities of bedding and home textiles, designed in Stockholm and currently sewn by my friend Syamala and her mother Konmari in Bāpatla, India. All products are made in well-selected materials of premium hemp, linen and lyocell. 10% of the profit always goes back to those who actually make our products. - Josefine, founder of FAIRLY

Production
Syamala, who is on site in India, is currently in charge of our entire production. Syam has a long background in textile design and craft production, so I am confident that everything is handled in a good way. We also have ongoing contact via video call during production to review designs, schedules, etc. As we are friends first and foremost, it makes communication easy. The goal is to be able to hire more women from a women's collective in her village in the future.
The fabric
I buy the fabric from the fabric supplier Boheco in Mumbai. Right now, the fibers come from several different places, including Eastern Europe (lyocell) and China (hemp and flax). Boheco is a relatively new company and their goal is to be able to offer the entire production from sown seed to finished fabric with complete traceability within India in the future. The reason I chose their fabrics is the mix of materials I couldn't find anywhere else. The fabric used is produced in India, i.e. from the thread becoming fabric. The hemp and linen come from China and are both organic and Oeko-Tex certified, which means that no harmful chemicals are in the thread when it is finished. I am constantly trying to get more information about where and how our fabrics are produced. Right now, there are only two states in India where it is legal to grow hemp, which is a big reason why the fibers in the fabric now used come from Europe and China.
Why hemp?
Hemp (Cannabis Sativa) is naturally antibacterial and the fibers are strong and breathable, so perfect for nice sheets and napkins! Hemp, unlike cotton, requires much less water during cultivation (about 50% less), it grows faster (3-4 months instead of 5-6 months for cotton) and is not as sensitive to temperature. On a hemp plant you get about 200% fibers compared to a cotton plant.
To you as a customer
I have chosen to produce small quantities of the products available in the webshop. Should something run out and you are interested in something that is not in stock, just send an email and I will write this up for the next order. In this way, only what is demanded is produced.
For products, I have chosen to have 40 degrees on the washing, so that the products last longer. They can be washed at 60 degrees (Note that this does not apply to products dyed with natural dye), but it wears more on the fabric. The bedding can be experienced as a bit rough after washing and drying, but become softer when used.
